We are Everything: Diyanet at Work
By Burcu Karakaş (’19) | Iletisim | May 1, 2021
Karakaş’ book takes an in-depth look at Diyanet, an institution that was created by a special law a year after the republic was founded in 1923, and its ever-increasing influence both inside and outside Turkey under the Justice and Development Party (AKP).
The Directorate of Religious Affairs, which does not hesitate to express its opinion on almost every issue and is often the target of criticism with its budget, is discussed with the meticulous work of Burcu Karakaş. “We are Everything” closely examines the budget, personnel, projects related to family, children and youth, the messages it conveys through its own media, its stance on gender and women issues, and its close relations with the government, which strengthened during the AKP era. The book supports its data with field studies conducted in one-on-one interviews.
Türkiye’nin gündeminden düşmeyen, hemen hemen her konuyla ilgili fikrini belirtmekten çekinmeyen ve kamuoyunda bütçesiyle sık sık eleştirilerin hedefi olan Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, Burcu Karakaş’ın titiz çalışmasıyla masaya yatırılıyor. “Biz Her Şeyiz” – Diyanet’in İşleri, AKP döneminde güçlenen Diyanet’in bütçesini, personelini, özellikle aile, çocuk ve gençlikle ilgili projelerini, kendi medya araçlarıyla ilettiği mesajlarını, toplumsal cinsiyet ve kadın konularında takındığı tavrı, iktidarla sıkı ilişkileriyle yakından inceliyor, birebir görüşmeler yürüttüğü saha çalışmalarıyla verilerini destekliyor.
