Sophie Schrago
Sophie Schrago (2020) is a trained anthropologist and filmmaker who draws on her experience living in different cultural settings to tell stories at the intersection of religion, race, ethnicity and gender. Her body of work – in and outside academia – is rooted in explorations of power and culture and bridges the worlds of social justice and artistic expression. Besides a documentary feature on women’s Sharia courts in India, her film work also includes documentary projects on issues related to Islam and queerness, masculinity and depression among African-American men, and Malcolm X’s internationalism and his connection to Sudan. She has also completed a range of observational short pieces documenting life in Mumbai and New York City. What she loves most is finding unique inspiring stories filled with quirky relatable details, and provoking empathetic moments that bridge viewer and subject and reveal fragmented points of view around the most controversial issues.
As a Logan Nonfiction fellow, Sophie will work on her documentary about a women-run Sharia court in India.
