Oscar Lopez
Oscar Lopez (2022) is a Mexican-Australian journalist based in Mexico City covering Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean for The New York Times. Prior to joining the Times, Oscar was Americas’ Correspondent for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, where he covered LGBT+ rights in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean. As a freelancer, Oscar has reported in more than a dozen countries for TIME, The Times of London, Guardian, Washington Post and many more. In 2020, Oscar was named Journalist of the Year by the NLGJA, the U.S. association of LGBT+ journalists. A graduate of Melbourne University, Oscar studied writing at the University of Oxford, where his creative nonfiction thesis project was supervised by author Sarah Bakewell.
During his time as a fellow, Oscar will be working on “Ghosts Next Door: The Story of Mexico’s Disappeared,” a book examining the horrifying history and tragic present of enforced disappearance in Mexico.
