Mengjue "Ashley" Jiang
Mengjue “Ashley” Jiang is a Chinese documentary filmmaker. Her work focuses on the intersection of gender, sexuality and race. She’s the founder of OutChina, a media advocacy project that spotlights and humanizes LGBTQ Chinese nationals. Her videos have gained millions of views on social media. Her recent short documentary, “A Chicken Nugget Love Story,” won the Best Documentary Award at 2019 Queer Comrades Competition, with over 7 million views globally. After graduating from USC’s School for Communication and Journalism, Ashley worked at The Advocate, America’s longest-running LGBTQ publication, as a video producer. She’s currently based in China, creating documentaries on diverse Chinese individuals.
As a Logan fellow, Ashley will work on her film, “Hovering,” which features a grass-root network of supportive Chinese mothers with LGBT children. As volunteers of the non-profit organization PFLAG (Parents for Lesbians and Gays), they’re dedicated to help families to understand what it means when their children come out, and to provide support and resources.
