Ian Bateson
Ian Bateson (2021) is a print and television journalist with over eight years of international experience in the field. He has reported from Russia to Nicaragua, working in five different languages. For most of his career Ian has been based in Ukraine, where he has reported on politics for outlets including The Washington Post, The Economist, The Atlantic and The New York Times. Since November 2020 he has been based in Germany, where he reports on Russian influence on European and German politics. He has received a Fulbright grant, a Kennan Institute fellowship and an International Reporting Project grant.
As a Logan fellow, Ian will work on his book, “A Real Country: Ukraine after Revolution and During War,” which aims to both provide lessons to the U.S. about re-evaluating heroes by looking at the fall of Lenin and other communist heroes in Ukraine since 2014, and to define Ukraine in the American consciousness.
